About the Position

Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington, is seeking a part-time Director of Music Ministries. Duties include providing musical leadership for worship, leading the volunteer worship band, direction of the adult choir, leading of children’s music, direction of the handbell choir, and worship planning and coordination.  A successful candidate will have a heart for people and for worship, and will be able to nurture the musical gifts of congregational members young and old.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or Musical Performance
  • 1-2 years of experience with vocal or instrumental music direction or equivalent experience

 Hours and Compensation

  • Up to 25 hours per week
  • Compensation based on ELCA Minneapolis Area Synod Compensation Guidelines and years of experience. Between $28,700.00 - $50,000.00 per year

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Provide Musical Leadership for Worship

  • Select and provide organ/piano music for 3-4 Sunday morning services a month and all Saturday evening services, working cooperatively with the Pastors to choose music for worship.
  • Select and provide organ/piano music for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
  • Accompany the adult choir at Wednesday night rehearsals and on 3-4 Sunday mornings a month from September through May.
  • Provide organ music for weddings and funerals held at the church, consulting with the wedding couples or families, if requested. (An additional stipend will be received for each service as specified in church policy.)
  • Prepare an annual budget and report detailing the current condition of the organ and pianos and specifying necessary maintenance.

Direct the Adult Choir 

  • Direct the adult choir in Wednesday night rehearsals toward participation in worship on 3-4 Sunday mornings per month September through May.
  • Prepare the choir for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
  • Work with the Organist and Pastors to arrange for and schedule appropriate music for worship during June, July, and August.
  • Actively recruit new members for the choir, providing an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care.
  • Oversee and work with the volunteers who maintain the church’s extensive choral music library.
  • Prepare an annual budget and purchase all music and music supplies for the adult choir.

Lead Children’s Music 

  • Lead children’s music activities during the Wednesday evening education rotation September through May.
  • Prepare the children to participate in worship as scheduled in consultation with the Pastors, on occasional Sundays and for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
  • Encourage all children in the church to participate in music, providing an atmosphere of musical learning, faith growth, and joy in making music together.
  • Collaborate with the Children, Youth, and Family Ministry Team to determine activities, prepare an annual budget, and purchase music and music supplies for the children.

Direct the Handbell Choir

  • Direct the handbell choir in one evening rehearsal per week toward participation in worship on the Sundays and festival days scheduled in consultation with the Pastors.
  • Prepare the choir for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
  • Plan and prepare for a special handbell choir performance each year during Advent.
  • Actively recruit new members for the handbell choir, providing instruction as needed and maintaining an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care. Work toward adding groups as needed, i.e. a children’s handbell choir or a beginners handbell group.
  • Oversee the proper maintenance and storage of the handbells.
  • Prepare an annual budget and purchase all music and music supplies for the handbell choir.

Lead the Worship Band

  • Lead the worship band in a weekday evening rehearsal and participation in Sunday worship during 1-2 weeks per month September through May.
  • Prepare the worship band for special services throughout the church year, as needed, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Holy Week.
  • Participate in the band as a pianist, vocalist, or guitarist.
  • Select worship band music, from the hymnal or other sources, appropriate for the vocalist(s) and instrumentalists participating.
  • Arrange parts for the instruments as needed, which may include piano, drums, guitar and bass guitar, flute, violin, saxophone, trumpet, etc.
  • Actively recruit new instrumentalists and vocalists for the worship band.
  • Oversee the set-up of the worship band space in the sanctuary, including the sound system, and maintain the equipment.
  • Prepare an annual budget and purchase all music and music supplies for the worship band.

Participate in Worship Planning – demonstrating a knowledge of Lutheran theology, liturgical practice, and use of music in worship, work together with the pastors to plan congregational worship.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with staff and lay leaders– Participate in weekly staff meetings and monthly council meetings. Maintain records for program assessment and evaluation. Pray for and support other staff and lay leaders.
  • Sponsor of Ministry Teams - work with members to create, equip, and resource new and existing ministry teams in the areas of healing and wholeness, including the Health Cabinet.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music with equivalent experience in organ, instrumental, and vocal music, as well as conducting.
  • Knowledge of the instrument. (Our organ is a Reuter Op. 1605 with 2 manuals and 31 ranks, est. 1968 with renovations and upgrades in 1977 and 2001, including console updates.)
  • Keyboard ability sufficient to play hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments at sight.
  • Knowledge of basic music theory, including simple transpositions or harmonizing a melody.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in choral conducting.
  • Ability to sing with accurate pitch and rhythm.
  • Knowledge of handbell notation and proper playing techniques.
  • 1-2 years experience leading a worship band.
  • Knowledge of Sibelius, Finale, or similar music notation software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to move freely up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to teach and communicate well, both orally and in writing.

We are a congregation that worships with communion at one Wednesday evening and one Sunday morning service each week, both in-person and streamed on-line. Additionally, the Director of Music Ministries would be expected to participate in other special worship services, including but not limited to all Holy Week services and Christmas Eve.
