Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope. Psalm 119:116

Anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24

As children of God we know that we to cling to God's promise of life now and in eternity. Faith lifts many a soul to remain steadfast in God's promises and in God's word. However, we know that there are occurrences in life that can test anyone's faith. The ravages of war; the discouragement of chronic illness; the unbelievable crises experienced by too many in weather-related disasters, and family issues are among the real moments in life which can dim hope.

Yet, even in the dark times, God's word gives us countless assurances, as in today's verses, that God is there and that we live under the umbrella of his promise of life. I think of the recent disastrous fires in the Los Angeles area. People still reeling in shock came back to the ruble of their homes, some even facing loss of loved ones to face a future that is unknown. Yet, before the fires were even contained, help arrived in ways no one could even imagine. Parking lots were overflowing with donated goods including food, clothing, and supplies of every kind.  Volunteers from everywhere staffed such places to facilitate distribution to those in need. Fire fighters, medical personnel, and other professionals came, even from other countries, to relieve and assist exhausted LA area personnel.

God's promise is lived in the lives of those who believe and follow the precepts of being God's child. Thanks be to God.

Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Thank you for the promise of abundant life now and in eternity. When hope dims, thank you for being there to lift our hope and belief. Help us to remain steadfast in your word, for your word is life. Amen.
