Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength is spent. Psalm 71:9

Jesus said to Peter, “Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you.” John 21:18

Both of these verses refer to growing old, old age. However that is not totally the focus of either. In Psalm 71, the writer is telling of his lifelong dependence on God. Earlier verses say that from birth he has relied on God. Since his youth, God has been his hope and confidence, a strong refuge. This is a person who had strong grounding in his faith, something he, no doubt, learned from his parents and will pass along to his children.

Jesus statement to Peter is a bit different. Reading the next verse we learn that this is Jesus’ way of indicating how Peter will die. Although it seems that Peter is not destined for “old age,” it shows that Jesus is there with Peter, encouraging him. Peter would have understood that his faith would not fail him again as it had just before the crucifixion. Just as Jesus is always there for us, someone to depend on, one who had died for all of us and was just resurrected.

God is with us through all the stages of life. From the moment of our birth, throughout our lives until death and on into eternal life. Our faith may waver along the way, but God’s promises and care for us never wavers.

Faithful God, be near us throughout our lives. We know we can trust you in all things. Reassure us that no matter what we go through in years to come, you will be with us. While our physical bodies may age, may our spirit and faith in you never fade. Amen.
