Bring the homeless poor into your house. Isaiah 58:7
The full verse from the Contemporary English Version: “Share your food with everyone who is hungry; share your home with the poor and homeless. Give clothes to those in need; don't turn away your relatives.”
And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:40
It seems so obvious – Jesus tells us that as we help those among us, those that we may see as the “least of these,” we are doing this for Him It’s in the book of Isaiah too – written centuries before. When we hear about people who need food – we should feed them. We do this by donating to VEAP or other food shelves handing out meals through Loaves and Fishes. Contributin to other charities like Union Gospel Mission, or Meals on Wheels.
We work to find affordable housing along with many other congregations, in being a part of Beacon. We can take action by corresponding with our representatives locally, statewide and nationally to urge legislation and policies that give better access to safe housing. Give clothing – many of us have more than enough to wear. Jesus tells us if someone asks for a coat, and we have two, we should give one away. Most of us have to clean out clothes – and then we donate to various places that in turn supply clothing to those in need.
The last part of Isiaah – don’t turn away your relatives, perhaps that includes neighbors. All are to be included. From a sign posted outside a church – “Jesus wasn’t neutral. He sided with the poor, sick, and immigrants. Be like Jesus.”
Jesus, we thank you that the weary and the poor can come to your throne and know they are accepted and loved. Govern our lives with love and open our hearts to the poor, the broken-hearted, and the lost. Lead us in the way of life and peace. Create in us a spirit of boldness and lead us into your way of willing sacrifice for others. Amen.
