The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2 NIV

When the magi saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they knelt down and paid him homage. Matthew 2:10-11

Can you remember a time when your heart was hurting, because things in your life seemed too dark to believe? Where was God then? Then, just when you were most discouraged, something happened that took some of the bleakness away and brought a bit a light and hope for a better day ahead.

Maybe it was a hug from a child, a surprise visit from a friend, the gift of food from someone who knew exactly one of your favorites, a message of prayer from someone in your life, a memory of better days, etc.

I often think of those who suffer during the tragedies that any war brings. When too much has been stripped away, the sufferers often find comfort in their faith and in the smallest kindnesses from those who surround them. It lifts the darkness of the day and brings a bit of light to the situation.

I do not know what weighs on each one of us, but I do know that light describes the sign of relief that can bring one up from the discouragements in life. The magi were led by the star. What made them know they were right in following the messenger that told them to follow the star? "God works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform." Sometimes the wonder isn't as dramatic as following the star was for the magi, but we know when the moment arrives and brings comfort beyond understanding.

Dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Thank you for the Holy Spirit that gives each believer the ability to believe in the light that brings us closer to you. Help each one who feels this light to share it with others and to lift others up in praise to you. Amen.
