“When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.”  Psalm 126:1

“Love never ends.  But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.  For now we see only a reflection, as in a mirror, but then we will see face to face.”  1 Corinthians 13:8, 12

What’s your name again?  Where are those car keys?  Now what did I come down here for?  I am at an age when conversation often turns to ……. aging.  The mirror tells just part of the story – the white hair, wrinkles, “muscle shifting”.   But there is more that the mirror doesn’t show – the things we can no longer do; and what we can do might be slower, stiffer, “tippier”; waning strength, vision, hearing, memory.

Perhaps we need some kind words beyond that mirror, beyond body image.  Can we look at ourselves as God sees us?  Into the heart where we might still see youthful curiosity and wonder, and appreciation for beauty.  Can we look at that face and find kind eyes and a friendly smile – a reflection of the love of Jesus Christ?

Can we look at others – face to face – as God sees them – his children, and love them without judgment of appearance and limitations?

Rather than dwell on what I can’t do I pray for the grace to dwell on what I can do.  I can’t run as far or as fast as I once did, but my hands and feet can still do God’s work.  I can’t sing first soprano anymore, but I can speak kindly and encourage others.  I can end dwelling on my own problems and pray with others as they face theirs.  Compassion and understanding, kindness and love … these will not end, with the help of God.

Gracious God, help me to not dwell on my own problems and complain, but to see the needs of others and support them as best I can.  As abilities change help me to trust in you for spiritual strength, comfort and peace.  Amen
