The Lord is my strength and my might, and he has become my salvation. Exodus 15:2
Mary said, "The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name." Luke 1:49
Moses and his people sang a song of praise to the Lord in Exodus 15. The Israelites were thankful that the Lord had performed a great miracle. The Lord had parted the Red Sea to let the Israelites escape the Egyptian armies, thus ending the Israelites' long years as slaves to the more powerful Egyptians. After the Israelites crossed the parted sea, the sea closed over Pharaoh's armies and killed every one of the pursuing soldiers. This is the greatest miracle in the Old Testament record of Israel's history--their "going out" from Egypt and slavery.
When Mary learned that she would be the mother of God's son, she went to the house of Elizabeth who exclaimed that Mary was indeed the mother of the Lord. Then Mary said the beautiful poem from Luke 1 praising God and thanking Him for the blessing of being the mother of Jesus, Son of God.
How can we see our place in God's plan when we hear these wonderful Biblical accounts of God's power and presence in the lives of his beloved people? We are, each of us, only one and can seem alone and small when we read these accounts of God's power and strength. Yet Jesus gave each of us the gift of baptism to free us from the tyranny of sin and to free us to live in his promises. There are times of discouragement, of course, but we are assured that God hears our every plea. We just need to open our eyes to his presence in our lives and to pray for his guidance.
Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Thank you for the assurance that you give to each one of us. Let us ever walk with you and follow your example. Fill us with faith, hope, and love for you and for each other. Give us voices to share our faith and with others. Help us to fill our hearts with words to pray to you. In your awesome name we pray, amen.
