I, the Lord, do not change. Malachi. 3:6
His mercy is for those who fear Him from generation to generation. Luke 1:50
We live in a world of change. Many of us have seen uncounted technical advances (even if some may not seem like advances) over the years. We have seen good changes giving equal rights to people in various groups that used to not have the same rights as others. We have seen times of prosperity, and also have a world that has gone through recessions and depressions. People change too. We age, we fall in and out of love, we try to follow God’s plan and often fail at doing that.
In Malachi, the people feel that God has not been faithful, they have been exiled, so where is God? The message Malachi brings says that the Lord does not change. Indeed, because the Lord does not change in His commitments and purpose, Israel has not been completely destroyed for her persistent unfaithfulness. Malachi is saying that Israel owes its survival entirely to the faithfulness of God remembering their covenant. Our God does not change, and He doesn’t forget the covenants made with Israel.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, acknowledges this in the words of the Magnificat. The verse from Luke says that God has mercy for all – for generation after generation. This unchanging God has not wavered in the promises of love and salvation since we were created. We can rejoice in this promise for ourselves and all the generations to come.
Unchangeable God, your Word, and promises of mercy are set in stone. You know us – every hair, every freckle. You don't change, but we do. We get older day by day -- new lines, new spots. Yet you still know us – every hair, every freckle. What a gift it is to be known by you! As we face challenges, may we find comfort in knowing your love and that we serve a maker who never changes. Amen.
