The hope of the righteous ends in gladness. Proverbs 10:28

Be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Luke 12:36

Advent is a time of waiting and preparation. Right now there is a lot of focus on Christmas, we see numerous ads for all the wonderful things we can buy for gifts (or for ourselves). There are lots of parties and shopping and gift wrapping. Yet, we are still in the season of Advent, a time of waiting for the arrival of the Messiah.

It is helpful to take some time and focus on Advent. To step back and take time to think about the miracle of Jesus coming among us in human form.  Just like Lent precedes Easter, Advent season precedes the arrival of the Christ child that we celebrate at Christmas. Jesus comes into a weary world, one where there are problems. One where many people are waiting and hoping for the Messiah to finally come.

In Luke, Jesus tells us to be ready and waiting. In the example the master of the household has gone to a wedding – unlike our weddings these could go on for a week. No one is sure when he will return. The listeners are told to be ready – he could come at any time. Did that mean they just say by the door waiting? Nope. They had household duties, there were lamps to keep lit, probably food to prepare. We too need to be active while we wait. Reading the Bible passages that talk about Jesus’ coming to earth. Being generous with our time, talents and funds as we help those who need us.

Jesus you are our hope and expectation. Lord, help us be active as we wait for you. Turn this season of anticipation into a song of praise, a time for service, and an opportunity to prepare this world for your truth and love. Amen.
