I will again do amazing things with this people, shocking and amazing. The wisdom of their wise shall perish, and the discernment of the discerning shall be hidden. Isaiah 29:14
The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. Matthew 15:31
We have an amazing God! An awesome, wonderful, astounding God who cares for us. In our Old Testament verse for today, God is telling the people I will do amazing things again. He had already done amazing things, got them out of Egypt, brought plagues That spared the first born of Israel. He guided them through the wilderness, providing manna. And water. However, now many people have forgotten. They have read the laws of Moses and are busily following the letter of the law. Most of the time. They're proud of their own wisdom, of their own discernment Rather than just simply following and listening to God..
Isaiah tells the people that God says He will again do amazing things with them. No matter that many have turned away. He is still there; He is still faithful. That is truly amazing. Matthew writes of the many astounding things that Jesus had done. He summarizes: the mute are speaking, the lame are walking, the blind are seeing. That is truly amazing. The crowd that sees all of these things, they are amazed, and they also praise God. They don't praise the wisdom of a healer. They don't praise the discernment of someone who has followed the law perfectly and therefore gets to be healed.
We have many things we call amazing in our world. We talk about amazing circus performers, amazing athletes. Just today I got an email saying: “We’re giving you AMAZING offers right now!” We talk about an amazing piece of cake or an amazing meal. Yet, none of these compares to the amazing God we have who cares for all of us and wants us to follow his ways Then we can all sing of His Amazing grace.
Amazing Grace.
How sweet the sound.
That saved a Wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found.
Was blind, but now I see.
Source of wisdom and wonder, your way and wisdom are higher and truer than anything we could devise. The works of your creative hands and your transforming touch overwhelm us with wonder and adoration. Help us to see and to celebrate the amazing things you are doing, in Jesus’ name, . Amen.
