The Lord shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Isaiah 2:4
You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. Acts 10:36
Peace seems too elusive as we hear of the atrocities brought on during any war. It is difficult to watch the news and to see the faces of the exhausted, sick, hurting, innocent people caught in the ravages of war. The leaders who control the actions of armies seek power at any cost and have little regard for the innocent citizens in places they hope to control.
Jesus brought a message of peace and healing for all people. Through the writings of Paul, we know that Jesus included all people, not just the Jews, as his people and wants peace for everyone. Even as we hear of the wars going on every day, we know that invaluable and helpful acts of kindness and love happen constantly even when war continues. God does not immediately stop people who seek to be in control no matter what, but he can and does intercede through those who love him and follow his ways in spite of all that tries to impede their acts of goodness. Their bravery and faith in God is demonstrated in ways that give hope to the hopeless. God has also shown over and over throughout the ages that even the most determined of aggressors cannot pursue conquests of war forever.
In addition to God's gift of grace, he has given us his word which guides us in compelling acts of forgiveness. By forgiving and seeking peace, people are instilled with strength to bring peace wherever possible. They also strive to heal the wounds of war and to bring civility to all. We know it is right to live in Jesus' light and to share peace wherever we can.
Dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
How thankful we are that we can look forward to eternal peace in the kingdom you have prepared for us. Each day, help us to turn from using weapons--whether they be words, physical injury, or weapons of war--that cause harm to another. Help us to always live in peace and to bring peace to those around us. Amen.
