Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff--they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

I like to read historical novels and am now reading The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer. One part of the novel depicts the life of a Polish family during World War II as they survive on their modest farm after the Nazis invade and claim all but barely enough for the Dziak family to survive. No matter what, the Dziak family gets up each day and faces their scary existence in the face of threats to their very existence.

Today's verse from 2 Corinthians describes what the Dziak family and millions of others face during the turmoils of war. Think of the faith it takes to endure and feel comfort knowing that no matter what God is there. The Apostle Paul was a daily example of having faith no matter what. He wrote to his followers of the blessings of faith in spite of being persecuted for his perseverance.  It is a gift of our heavenly Father that we can face incredible difficulties in life, because we have the assurance of his abiding grace.

Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Thank you for your constant presence in the lives of all of us who believe in you. When afflictions come into our lives--and they will--give us wisdom to reach out to you. You are indeed the rod and staff that comforts us as soon as we use our breath to call on you. Help us to always lift our voices to you for your help and to pray for others in need. Amen.
