These people draw near with their mouths and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me. Isaiah 29:13
Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 1 John 3;18
We are privileged to be children of God who worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus preached in Matthew 25: 40, "...Truly I tell you just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." We are his children, and he is calling each one of us to truth and action on the behalf of others.
Even as we have endured a year of exceptional discomfort, terrible news, illness, worry, etc., we have also heard story after story of incredible generosity, dedication to serving others, and just plain kindness beyond our imaginations. I think of health care workers, fire fighters, food shelf volunteers, neighbors helping neighbors in distress; I could go on and on.
Of course, there are those who cannot bring themselves to see beyond what they consider their own wants and needs. We hear of those kinds of people who speak well but do little or nothing to help others. We know who they are. They are recognized for their lack of genuine caring spirit almost immediately.
Fortunately, thousands benefit each day from the loving kindnesses of those who help, speak truth, and act in accordance with the example and words of Jesus. May we open our hearts to serve in faith and loving kindness wherever we can.
Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, What a privilege to worship you! Help each one of us to give our love and devotion to you by serving others. Let our daily lives become acts of worship as we reach out to help. Amen.
