He will proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. Zechariah 9:10
God gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. Philippians 2:9-10
Zechariah writes about the universal rule of God throughout the world. He refers to the dominion of God from sea to sea – in his case from the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates – the whole world. God is no longer thought of as just the God for the people of Israel, but He is a God that is for everyone. One that will bring peace to all the nations.
Just ahead of our verse for today Zechariah talks about God destroying war chariots, breaking bows, and then peace comes. No more trusting in the chariots and their use in war. In Psalms it says: “Some put their trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7) Then we read Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Jesus as Messiah is the fulfillment of what Zechariah prophesied. Jesus' name is above every other name in the world, He is the one that can truly bring peace. The power for this peace is spiritual, not the result of winning lots of battles in a war.
God’s design is that everyone everywhere will worship Jesus as Lord. No more divisions, or wars, or battles. As the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus, spreads throughout the world, we can all live in the harmony that God intended at Creation. When He said that everything was good.
As the song by Rich Mullins says:
Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God.
Almighty God, glorious King, thank you for the sure promise that your rule will be recognized in this world. Your son is the savior of the world, your eternal word, by whom and for whom all things were made. We confess that we often think we are the rulers of our lives. Give us grace to take the posture of humility in your presence and work for peace and justice in our world. May all that we do glorify you as we go through each day. We pray in the name of Jesus, the name that is above every name. Amen
