And you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father and serve God with single mind and willing heart; for the Lord searches every mind and understands every plan and thought. I Chronicles 28:9
Now may the God of peace make you complete in everything good so that you might do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Hebrews 13:20-21
Focusing on one task at a time seems difficult to many of us. We are proud of being able to multi-task, doing several things at once. Working on one thing while thinking about something else. This might be ok while walking the dog, as long as we notice the passing cars and cross streets safely. Often, however, we don’t do any of the tasks as well as if we actually focused on one thing at a time. In fact, we are told that multitasking really isn’t possible. All we are doing is rapidly switching back and forth among what we are doing or thinking. (Just to confess, the TV with reports on Ukraine is on as I write this, not multitasking well at all)
We read in I Chronicles some of David’s advice to Solomon. In order to be a good king and leader, he must serve God. To do that, it requires focus, or as the verse says, “single mind and willing heart.” David warns that God knows what we do, and even what we are thinking. Rather than being scary, this sounds like God is concerned with us, and our work here on earth. He knows our plans, and whether we are paying attention to His plans for us. It can be really hard to keep our focus on God, with all the interference of other things around us. If you have ever tried quiet mediation, you know how hard it can be to keep your focus without lots of stray thoughts coming to mind.
Is there hope and help for us to do this? The writer of Hebrews ends the book with a benediction. He asks God to make us complete, to enable us to do His will. Take some time each and every day to pray for God’s help, to read from His word, and then try to keep our focus on doing His will.
All-knowing God, you see our every thought and motive. Forgive our foolish self-centered confidence that often conflicts with your purpose Let our hearts be drawn into complete harmony with your plans. Thank you for always being available when we seek your guidance. May your peace be at work through our words and actions today. In Jesus’ name, Amen
Chris Gabel
