O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. Psalm 98:1

From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. John 1:16

Music has been part of worship since before Christ as evidenced by the Psalms. There are hundreds of references to music in the Bible. Music lends itself to expressions of personal and communal beliefs about faith and life. Today's verses express thankfulness to God for what he has done and for the grace we have received. Often, I will hear a reading from the Bible and find myself remembering a hymn or selection that was composed for the words being read. Music is a gift from God to enrich our worship and life experiences.

We cannot know what moves each composer to write songs of faith, but we do know that such compositions are written to include praise, worship, penitence, and lament. Music can lift us up when times are difficult and can mirror the peace and joy we feel when we experience the blessings of life. Oh, what a comfort it is that among the many gifts of grace which God has granted, the gift of expression through music is among them.

Dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Thank you for the many blessings you have provided in life. Thank you for the gift of music which helps us to enhance our worship of you. Show us ways to share the melody of grace and love throughout our lives. Amen.
